Dubai launches desert tourism project Al Layan Oasis as part of Dh4b plan
Dubai has announced the launch of Al Layan Oasis, a major desert tourism destination forming part of a Dh4 billion package of green and water-based development projects. The initiative was unveiled by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Spanning 10 million square feet, the project will be centred around a 2.5 million square foot lake and will feature leisure facilities, sports trails, camping zones, and immersive desert tourism experiences. The development aims to strengthen Dubai’s tourism offering while creating a new environmental and economic landmark.
The oasis forms part of the Blue and Green Roadmap 2030 launched by Dubai Municipality, promoting nature-based investments that enhance wellbeing, sustainability, and quality of life. It also aligns with broader strategies including the Dubai Countryside and Rural Areas Development Plan, the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
Located around 50 minutes from the city centre, the destination will include integrated infrastructure, 1,000 parking spaces, and 14 kilometres of walking and cycling tracks — including 4 kilometres of elevated pathways offering panoramic desert views and connections to Al Marmoom routes.
Expected to attract approximately 330,000 visitors annually, Al Layan Oasis will balance eco-tourism growth with environmental preservation. The project will feature four main zones — Gathering, Family, Camping, and Recreation — offering event spaces, rest areas, caravan facilities, retail outlets, and environmental education experiences.
The initiative reflects Dubai’s continued commitment to sustainable development, innovative tourism infrastructure, and long-term economic diversification.
